Keeping your LinkedIn profile current and aligned with the types of jobs you want is crucial, as is staying on top of new training and development opportunities.

Whether you’re nearing the end of your education and preparing to enter the job market, aiming for a promotion within your current organisation, or looking to step into a different role with a new company, keeping your professional profile up to date is always a smart move. No matter where you are in your career, it’s never too early to position yourself for success.

Social media presence

In today’s digital world, a well-curated online presence can really make a difference. Keep your LinkedIn profile current, as it can act like an online CV, be a way to connect with useful industry contacts and highlight potential job opportunities that might suit your areas of interest. You can also make yourself visible to companies you’re interested in by following them, engaging in discussions and reaching out to individuals for career advice – remember, LinkedIn is a social network designed for networking and interaction.

Consider other social media platforms, too. Posting about your travels on TikTok or Instagram, for example, can show your passion for different cultures as long as you get the tone right.

“Make sure any public social media you have reflects you as a professional and someone your target company might want to employ,” says Vicki Wolf, head of education and career development at Abta.

And don’t forget to show off your extra-curricular attributes. “Activities and interests can be very important,” says Owen McKeon, marketing and operations manager at C&M Travel Recruitment. “If you’ve run a marathon for charity or the community, it can say a lot about your character. Things like sporting or musical achievements also show commitment, discipline and motivation.”

Highlight your skills

Don’t be intimidated by the term ‘transferable skills’. You probably possess more than you realise, such as problem solving, time management and attention to detail. These skills are relevant in various contexts. The key is to highlight them effectively on your CV, cover letter and LinkedIn profile.

“Most travel employers are looking for candidates who are motivated, with a great attitude, flexibility, eagerness, enthusiasm and drive. They want to see good communicators who are hard workers,” says McKeon

Further growth

Even after getting a job, professional development doesn’t stop. In a new role, you’ll gain additional skills and responsibilities, but there’s always potential for further personal growth.

Explore the career development opportunities provided by your organisation, such as further training or apprenticeship programmes for advanced qualifications. Speak with your line manager or the HR department to discover what options are available.
