Working in travel
Why Work in Travel
We asked people in the industry to reveal their favourite things about working in travel
John Garside, Lecturer at Birmingham Metropolitan College, who formerly worked in sales roles for United Airlines, Continental Airlines and travel agency Travelbag.
“When I reflect on working in travel, I use one word to describe my career – lucky! I’ve been able to work with wonderful people, visit amazing destinations and have fabulous experiences. I’ve had the opportunity to open new offices, implement new airline routes and work with so many different people. When I started my career, I could never have imagined I’d do all of that. This is the best industry in the world and it is all about people and connections. I am so lucky to have been a part of it and now have the best job teaching the future talent of the industry.”Â
Claire Steiner, co-founder, ITT Future You, an industry initiative to inspire the next generation.
“The ability to build valuable skills while exploring a dynamic, global career is what makes the travel industry unique. Working in travel helps you develop strong communication and customer service skills, as professionals regularly interact with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds. In addition, the sector is increasingly shaped by digital tools, working with technology and data. All of these experiences teach adaptability, resilience, empathy and problem‑solving – skills that are vital in any career.”
Florence Allen, personal travel expert, Kuoni, tour operator.
“For me, it’s all about the culture, the people and the creativity. There’s something truly special about helping someone plan their dream trip or bucket‑list adventure. I’m fortunate to explore such a diverse mix of destinations through my work and I never take that for granted. A career in travel has opened doors I never imagined possible – it’s exciting, fulfilling and I can’t wait to see where it takes me next, as well as which destinations I’ll discover along the way.”
Vishal Patel, director of tour operator Travelpack and chairman of Tipto (Truly Independent Professional Travel Organisation)
“I love the travel industry because it is mostly about making dreams come true. It offers an incredibly rewarding career where no two days are the same, combining global knowledge, sales skill and a huge dose of creativity. If you want a career that constantly evolves and rewards passion, the travel sector is the best place to be.”
Vicki Wolf, head of education and career development, Abta, The Travel Association.
“I once heard someone say that the travel industry is one of the only sectors where your colleagues are as excited about your holidays as you are! The travel industry is always changing and you’ll never get bored, no matter which area of travel you choose. If you love learning, it’s definitely the place for you.”
