Nine reasons to work in travel

We don’t need an excuse to shout about the industry – but here are nine great reasons to embrace a career in travel

1. Every day is different

It sounds like a cliché, but travel is constantly changing and evolving. World events can mean a tour operator decides to stop flying to a particular destination, while a new flight route means they might start selling trips somewhere they haven’t before. If you’re a travel agent, new enquiries can change your day for the better, while flight delays or other snags in a client’s itinerary can have you thinking on your feet. This industry keeps you on your toes, but that’s what makes it all the more thrilling.

2. It’s incredibly rewarding

Having a sense of fulfilment comes in many forms in this industry. It could be planning the trip of a lifetime as a travel agent or opening up visitors’ eyes anew to a place they’re familiar with as a tour guide. It might be giving a family unforgettable memories as a crew member on a cruise ship or working behind the scenes organising an industry conference or in operations at an airport.

3. The opportunities are endless

Travel and tourism is probably far bigger and more varied than you’d have ever thought. There are many avenues, whether it’s staying at one company and working your way up or becoming an integral part of a small, family-run business. Many skills are transferable across roles in the various sectors. For example, you could feasibly have a career path working for a hotel chain, a tour operator and an airline. Your options are always open when it comes to your journey in travel.

4. It’s an industry of innovation

With an ever-changing consumer landscape, the industry is never one to stand still. Everyone plays their part to make sure customers are satisfied, whether that’s utilising AI and automation to streamline booking systems and operational efficiency, using data-driven analysis to understand customer behaviour or developing virtual reality software to act as training tools for travel agents. Much of the industry’s innovation is geared to helping us all travel easier, smarter and cleaner.

5. It’s a tight-knit community

Even though in this guide you’ll see plenty of references to how big and wide-reaching the industry is, when you’re on the inside it actually feels much smaller. That’s largely down to how interconnected everyone is – such is the nature of this collaborative industry that sectors and companies constantly work with one another, whether it’s day-to-day operations or marketing campaigns. You’ll find people are helpful and friendly – a result of having a passion for travel and a desire to keep improving the industry for everyone.

6. There’s good job satisfaction

Job satisfaction across the industry has been consistently highly rated over the years, with regular surveys conducted to monitor employees’ happiness. In 2025, a survey by online booking system RateHawk found 92% of travel agents had high job satisfaction. Elsewhere, in a poll by Best Workplaces in Travel in 2025, 78% of respondents said they felt their employer cared about their wellbeing and the same number felt they were contributing meaningfully to their company’s goals.

7. You’ll feel like a citizen of the world

When your day-to-day job revolves around travel, anyone who is passionate about seeing the world will find things to enjoy. But this sector offers so much more than that: the rich variety, the friendly support, the diverse opportunities and the strong satisfaction those across the industry have reported – year in, year out. All of those ingredients are what make this industry so great to be a part of. You’ll be hard pushed to find someone who hasn’t made friends for life and unforgettable memories along the way.

8. You can (literally) broaden your horizons

Not every job has you jetting off to exotic locations every week, but whatever career path you consider, you’ll be involved with locations worldwide. Cabin crew and travel agents receive a lot of attention due to the amount they travel, but you can learn about the industry’s global nature in many ways. For example, as a ticketing agent you’ll become a master of airport codes, while a marketing role at a tour operator means you’ll be busy promoting all the trips it sells.

9. It’s a lot of fun!
